Erik's Big Return

I am kind of excited Erik Paulson is returning to active MMA fighting. The former Shooto light heavyweight champion will fight in Mark Cuban's new promotion "HDNet Fights."

Paulson is considered a living encyclopedia of leg locks. He is one of the most in demand coaches on the seminar circuit. I love his material on grappling and the clinch. Paulson calls his curriculum of MMA/grappling/no-gi "Combat Submission Wrestling" also called CSW for short. He's also developed a method of standup fighting called "STX." No doubt influenced from his days training Jeet Kune Do under Guro Dan Inosanto, "STX" combines fighting applications from Savate, Muay Thai, Western boxing, Jun Fan/JKD and Panantukan(Phillipino boxing.)

My old JKD/MMA coach was an instructor under Sensei Paulson, thus most of the MMA/grappling material I've learned has come from CSW, however I've yet to train any STX stuff. However I am anxious to learn.

I also think Paulson DVD instructionals are some of the best on the video market. Of course, nothing can replace a coach and "live" training, but Paulson has released a lot of solid videos on all aspects of the MMA and grappling game.

Of course nothing is like training with him. His seminars are some of the most enjoyable I've been to. Despite the fact I seem to leave feeling down on myself because I'm able to incorporate/retain much of the techniques and moves he teaches, I realize those particular moves aren't mine to "possess" yet. I am thankful for the stuff I have retained. To be fair he goes through and huge amount of material in order to make it relevant for the beginners as well as the veterans.

He may have been retired for seven years and although he is 40 years old, I still look forward to seeing him back on the mat. It'll be exciting to see him back in action. Welcome back Erik!
